Full Description

You might be wondering why we chose to represent our Discipleship Hub with a Māui Hook. The first Christians started to use a fish sign to identify themselves as followers, and later on they were identified by a cross. The Maui Hook logo is significant to us for several reasons. In Aotearoa (meaning New Zealand in Māori), there is a legend about Māui who used a hook for fishing. The hook also provided Māui with safety on his journey and success.  So, the local people use this symbolism to communicate to travellers their wishes of safety and provision. If you look a little closer at our logo, you will notice the letter ‘J’ for Jesus. Just as the Māui Hook was representative of safety and provision in the Māori culture, we believe that Jesus is the one who guarantees safety on our life’s journey with Him. Think about the function of a hook and the way it is used to catch things. Isn’t this what Jesus calls us to? Being ‘fishers of men’ and catching others as our journey progresses? We believe the Māui Hook is a great way to connect with our Pacific location and identity as a Union.rnrnAs you return to the www.discipleship.org.nz Hub over the coming months, we hope the ‘Jesus Hook’ will be a constant visual reminder of God’s provision in our lives and the way he calls us to not only follow him, but to make disciples too.
